Nutty Fortunes
Click to print some buggy fortunes, then follow these directions to make fortune nuts.
What You'll Need:
walnuts
plastic knife
pen or pencil
yarn or ribbon
scissors
glue
nutcracker
What to Do:
1. For each fortune nut, ask an adult to help you carefully split open a walnut along the seam of its shell with the knife.
2. Remove the nut from the shell halves and scrape out the insides with the tip of the knife so they are hollow and clean.
3. Cut out the buggy fortunes. Some have been left blank--fill those with your own fortunes. They can be funny sayings, wise predictions, or jokes--anything goes!
4. Choose one of the fortunes, roll it up, and put it inside one of the shell halves.
5. Cut a six-inch length of yarn. Knot one end of it and lay the knot inside one of the shell halves on the rounded end.
6. Take the matching half and dot glue around the edges, then press the two halves together to seal. Set aside to dry.
Hang the fortune nuts on a tree (indoors or outdoors) after they have dried. Ask friends and family members to choose a nut and crack it open with the nutcracker. They'll be surprised to find a nutty fortune inside!
