Mama Panya's Pancakes: A Village Tale from Kenya

by Mary and Rich Chamberlin
Barefoot Books, 2005
Mmmm, pancakes! In France, we call our pancakes crêpes. Zey are paper-thin, and we spread zem with lemon juice, powdered sugar, or jam. In Kenya, pancakes are made with little bit of red pepper and some sweet cardamom. Everyone around zee world loves pancakes!
In zis story, a little boy named Adika goes to zee market with his mother so zey can make pancakes for supper. Along zee way, Adika invites all his friends to join zem for Mama’s delicious pancakes. But Mama Panya only has two coins! How will she make enough pancakes for everyone? Zis story has a surprise ending that will make you happy—and hungry!
My favorite part of zis book was zee recipe in the back for Mama Panya’s Pancakes. Zey would make a great surprise for your mère on Mother’s Day. Their spicy-sweet flavor makes even a grumpy Spider get out of bed in zee morning! (Or, make her a yummy batch of my Magnificent Muffins—see p.18 of zee May/June 2010 Spider for zee recipe!)
