Storybook Stew

by Suzanne I. Barchers & Peter J. Rauen
Fulcrum Publishing, 1996

In January, my buggy friends spend most of their day reading. What eez a gourmet chef to do?

Storybook Stew eez a collection of cozy, warm recipes for dishes like apple butter, oatmeal cookies, and curry rice. Every single one of zees recipes was inspired by a book! Spider eez reading a story about Anansi, a tricky spider from Africa and Jamaica, so I made him a tasty batch of “Tiger’s Coconut Soup.” Zee recipe eez based on an Anansi legend! Sonya loves to eat “Curious George’s Vanilla Ice Cream,” even though it eez cold outside. Thistle and Ophelia are begging me to make another delicious batch of “Sal’s Blueberry Bread,” because zey adore zee story “Blueberries for Sal.” Sam wants “Mama Bear’s Honey Nut Porridge” every morning—can you guess what story zat recipe is from? ’ere’s a hint: trois bears! And of course, everybuggy raves about my exquisite version of “Stone Soup,” full of hot broth and délicieux vegetables.

If you’re not a gourmet chef like moi, every recipe comes with a fun activity. You can make play dough, invisible ink, or even raspberry mouthwash! Zis book is great for long winter days when you’re stuck inside! (Moi, I do not like zee snow. I’d rather be in my warm kitchen!)
