Tiger Soup

Retold and illustrated by Frances Temple
Orchard Books, 1994

Zis morning something ‘orrible 'appened to me! I was making zee sweet plantains from zis month’s Spider (mmm, with zee brown sugar and cinnamon and butter), and zee moment I turned my back, zat sneaky Spider ate zem all!

I was devastated, so I decided to read a book to take my mind off zee situation. I was surprised to find zat zee book was about zee very same thing—a sneaky spider tricks a master chef out of 'is very special soup!

In zee book, zee chef is a tiger, not a mushroom, and 'e is making zee most delicious Jamaican soup with coconut and mangos and just a leetle pinch of nutmeg. Just when eet's time for zee chef to taste 'is masterpiece, Anansi zee tricky Spider comes up and—voila!—slurps up all zee soup while zee tiger is not looking! Then Anansi, zat clever buggy, teaches some monkeys a song about eating zee soup —and when Tiger hears zem singing, he thinks zey did eet!

Zee story made me very sad, but at least I have a new soup recipe to try. But zis time . . . Spider, KEEP OUT of my kitchen!
