What's Everybuggy Reading: Ophelia

Mom and Dad are Palindromes

by Mark Shulman

Chronicle Books, 2006

Hi, Spider-lings! I have a fun quiz for you. What do the following words have in common?:

MOM
DAD
KAYAK
EYE

Give up? These words are all “palindromes,” which means they’re the spelled the same way forwards and backwards. In this book, our hero discovers the wild, confusing world of palindromes. Suddenly, he sees them everywhere. His M-O-M is a palindrome. His D-A-D is a palindrome. Even his own name is a palindrome: B-O-B! How will he ever escape from palindromes?

Spider’s favorite palindrome is “Ogopogo”—the name of a fictional lake monster in Canada. Mine is the phrase “Madam, I’m Adam!” (Can you find it in the book?) What’s your favorite palindrome? Write to Spider's Mailbox and let everybuggy know!

Did you know this palindrome?: Go hang a salami -- I'm a lasagna hog!
By the way, is Ogopogo real?
