What's Everybuggy Reading: Ophelia
The Winter Wren

by Brock Cole (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1984)
Like many books we're reading this month, this book is older than Spider magazine! However, everybuggy can relate to its subject: when will spring arrive? A boy named Simon and his adorable little sister Meg live in a village where there is no Spring. The wheat is dying, the food is running out, and their mother is worried. So Simon decides to look for Spring. All he knows is that she is a princess dressed in green and gold.
Simon and Meg set off to find Spring, but on the way they run into Winter. They ask him for help, but he throws hailstones at them. One of them hits sweet little Meg and turns her into a brown wren! Simon is heartbroken, but the wren whispers in his ear, “Do as I say, and everything will come right.”
Does Simon find his little sister? Will Spring ever come to the village again? You’ll have to read all the way to the end of this lovely story to find out. Then you can start looking for spring, too!
