Yellow Elephant

Yellow Elephant: A Bright Bestiary
By Julie Larios
Harcourt, Inc. 2006

After reading “The Elephant Moon of Sir Herbert Spoon” and chuckling over “Excellent Elephant Jokes,” I was ready for exciting elephant poetry! This book of poems is as brightly colored as springtime. You’ll love the title poem “Yellow Elephant,” especially its last stanza:

Oh,
I think no other animal can
(I know a mosquito can’t)
glow in the jungle sun
like a wild-eared
yellow elephant.

Isn’t that cool? The vivid images make it easy to picture the yellow elephant, shining in the bright jungle sun. Have you ever heard of a pink kitten, a turquoise lizard, or a red donkey? You’ll get to know all these unusual animals through the book’s catchy, rhythmic poems. Be sure to read “Black Fish” and “Silver Gull”—two of my favorites!
