What's Everybuggy Reading: Sam
Animals in Disguise

by Martine Duprez (Charlesbridge, 1994)
Reading about eyespots in this month’s Spider made me wish I had some sort of disguise! Ophelia is almost invisible when she’s on a leaf, and Spider blends in perfectly with hairy black dust balls, but there aren’t many places for a fuzzy yellow caterpillar like me to hide.
You’ll wish you had a cool disguise after learning about how animals camouflage themselves in this book. Did you know that there’s an insect called the Walking Stick that looks exactly like a twig? Or that the Alpine Ptarmigan changes color every season—brown spots in summer, gray feathers in autumn, and white in winter? You probably knew that chameleons can change color, but you may not have known that they turn black if they’re scared or angry, which—oops!—ruins their disguise.
I’m going to work on some disguises of my own after reading this book! Can you think of anything that’s yellow and fuzzy, just like me? To let me know, just send me a message through Spider's Mailbox!
