Birdsongs

by Betsy Franco
Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2007

Did you read about the chickadees in this month’s Spider? I thought it was so cool that they communicate with each other by singing. Birdsongs can mean everything from “Back off! This is my territory!” to “Hi! I’m feeling great today!” to “Uh oh—danger is near!”

This book taught me all about the different birdsongs: what they sound like, when the birds sing them, as well as some fascinating facts about each bird. The pictures are made from beautiful cut pieces of paper, and you won’t believe how cool the birds look. I loved imitating the birdsongs: “qua qua” for ducks, “tzik tzik” for hummingbirds. If I practice really hard, maybe one day a bird will think I’m real! I’d love to see a thrasher or a mourning dove up close.
