How Oliver Olson Changed the World

How Oliver Olson Changed the World
By Claudia Mills
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2009
I was pretty sad (and confused!) when scientists decided that Pluto wasn’t a planet anymore. But I knew that if I wanted to be a scientist, I needed to find out all I could about the Pluto debate. This book is full of funny, fictional moments and great Pluto facts. What more could a scientific, fun-loving caterpillar like me ask for?
Oliver is in third grade, and his parents ALWAYS do his homework. They also make him eat super-healthy snacks and don’t let him go to sleepovers. Oliver puts up with it, until he finds out that the whole third grade is having a space sleepover at the school—and he’s not allowed to go!
Every third grader is supposed to make a diorama of the planets before the big sleepover. Oliver and his partner, Crystal, don’t think it’s fair that Pluto is left out. Oliver comes up with a great way to include Pluto—but will his parents approve? And will they ever change their minds about the space sleepover?
After you read this book, you can ask yourself: should Pluto be a planet again? Or do you agree with the scientists?
