What's Everybuggy Reading: Sam

Snowflake Bentley

Jacqueline Briggs Martin

Houghton Mifflin Company, 1998

The book is about Wilson Bentley, who lived in the state of Vermont his whole life, where there’s often ten feet of snow every year! When he was a kid, Willie, as he was called, loved snow so much that he spent his days looking at snowflakes under a microscope. He realized that no two snowflakes are the same, and that most snowflakes have six identical branches. They were so beautiful that he wanted to draw them, but the snowflakes always melted before he could finish his pictures.

When Willie was a little older, his parents bought him a camera with its own microscope. Using that amazing invention, he was able to take pictures of snowflakes. Finally, he could show the world the beauty of these lovely, tiny crystals. After years of patient studying and photography, Wilson Bentley became the world’s first snowflake expert.

After reading this book, I’m more excited than ever for the first snowfall of the year. I can’t wait to see what I can do with snow this year. (Last winter, I made a whole set of snow dishes. I was sure I could have figured out a way to preserve them if Miro hadn’t poured Candy Cane Cocoa into the mugs. Let’s just say Ophelia wasn’t too happy when her cup melted in her hands.)
