Belinda the Ballerina

Belinda the Ballerina

by Amy Young
Viking, 2002

When the time for New Year’s resolutions rolls around, I like to remind myself that nobuggy’s perfect. Spider will never be as fast as I am. Ribburta the frog was too small to be a dancer—and Belinda the Ballerina has a very similar problem. (Listen to Ribburta and the Rootintootin' Highfalutin' Ballet Extravaganza!)

Belinda is a beautiful dancer. She twirls, she twists, she glides across the floor as gracefully as a swan. But when she tries to audition for the Annual Ballet Recital, the judges scream at her to go home. Why? Because Belinda has some seriously BIG feet!

Heartbroken, Belinda gets a job as a waitress and tries to forget about her dancing dreams. But one day, a snazzy-jazzy band comes to play at her restaurant. They play toe-tapping tunes and sweet yearning lilts, and before you know it, Belinda is—DANCING!

I loved this story because the graceful illustrations of Belinda as she soars through the air remind me of my favorite flying moves. Have a perfectly amazing 2010!
