What's Everybuggy Reading: Sonya
Bobby the Brave (Sometimes)

by Lisa Yee, illustrated by Dan Santat
Arthur A. Levine Books, 2010
I always feel brave when I try out a new flying stunt. I remember the first time I attempted a double-floop-whamdinger roll with a triple-decker twist—boy, was I nervous! But now it feels as easy as a single-floop-bamflopper-flip with a cannonball twirl. (Piece of cake, right?)
The point is, everybuggy gets nervous. Did you know that Ophelia sometimes gets nervous when she writes "Ophelia's Last Word"? Even Miro gets the jitters when he tries out a complicated new recipe! If you're feeling nervous about going back to school, maybe you'll relate to Bobby the Brave. What doesn’t go wrong for Bobby? He can’t throw a football, his goldfish (and little sister) might get eaten by a twenty-seven-toed cat rumored to have wrecked a mini-van, and he has rotten, no-fun asthma. Worst yet, he’s scared of disappointing his pro-football player dad, nicknamed "The Freezer." But not everything is bad—he has a great part in the class play and can do awesome tricks on his skateboard.
Sometimes when Bobby would get scared, I'd think, Gee, he’s not so brave! But this book taught me what bravery really is. Sometimes, bravery just means telling someone how you really feel. Gosh, is that all? I tell Spider how I feel all the time! I'm SUPER brave!
