What's Everybuggy Reading: Sonya

My Father's Dragon

You read in this month’s Spider (“Here There Be Dragons,” p. 21) about the vicious nature of Komodo dragons. I admit I was a little distracted from the fascinating article by our own invading, hiccupping, fire-breathing dragon. Between the food-crazed Komodos and Spider’s disastrous attempts to be the hero, you can imagine what a relief it was to meet some nice, polite dragons in this book.

The story begins with Elmer, a young boy, on a quest to rescue a baby dragon who fell out of the sky and is being kept by wild animals on Wild Island. The dragon is so grateful to his rescuer that he lets the boy ride on his back—something Spider wasn’t too eager to try with our dragon visitor!

These dragons don’t blow fire like the one running through our pages, and they don’t eat people or even other animals . . . not even buggies! I’m telling you, you’ll never meet more well-mannered dragons. From one adventure to another, Elmer and the dragon help canaries who are dying of curiosity on their own private island, fly across oceans, eat lots of lollipops (and tangerines!), and hatch a plan to save the dragon’s family.

p.s. I, a lovely damselfly, am closely related to the dragonfly species. Don’t let the name fool you—dragonflies aren’t vicious or scary at all! I've never seen one breathe fire at anyone (although my cousin Danni has really bad breath).
