What's Everybuggy Reading: Sonya

The Tapestry Cats

Ann Turnbull

All Books for Children, 1992

What’s “as secret as moonlight and as quick as thought?” Although you might have responded, “Sonya, of course,” another correct answer would be “Silver”—one of the tapestry cats from this beautiful book. The swirly illustrations and rambunctious cats make me want to practice my short-distance speed flying all afternoon.

This story is about a princess who isn’t allowed to do anything fun. Her mother forces her to walk around in uncomfortable dresses and heavy jewels, and--worst of all--she’s not allowed to have pets! (I wonder if she’d like to adopt Spider?)

The princess falls in love with two beautiful cats pictured in the tapestries hanging in the castle. She imagines they are real and pretends to play with them. Read the book to find out what happens when her birthday comes up—and her fairy godmother who is great at guessing her thoughts works some magic.
