What's Everybuggy Reading: Spider
A Week of Raccoons

by Gloria Whelan (Alfred A. Knopf, 1988)
Raccoons are some of the sneakiest animals I know. They even come with built-in masks! (Make your own raccoon mask here.) Poor Mr. and Mrs. Twerkle have raccoons all over their yard—eating their fish, knocking over their petunias, and rummaging through their garbage. Mrs. Twerkle hates it! So one by one, Mr. Twerkle catches the raccoons by smearing bacon with peanut butter and sugar (“Quelle horreur!” says Miro). Then, he lets them go in the woods.
Sounds like a good plan, right? Unfortunately, Mr. Twerkle doesn’t realize that all the raccoons are becoming friends. By gathering information from each other, they figure out a way to get back to the Twerkle’s house, which is full of delicious fish and garbage. Will they find their way back to terrorize the Twerkles again? Or will something distract them?
This month, you read about lots of sneaky animals. You met rambunctious raccoons (and siblings) in “Doodlebug & Dandelion,” devious ducks in “No Ducks For Dinner,” and all kinds of suspicious species in "Eyes in the Back of Your Head." But don’t be fooled: the sneakiest, trickiest, most mischievous animal of all is still THE SPIDER!
