What's Everybuggy Reading: Spider
Cowboy and Octopus

by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith
Viking, 2007
Don't you just love the great big googly-eyed, pointy-toothed, purple-and-green-spotted, boy-eating sharks with black top hats and terrible singing voices in this month’s Spider (“Fred Says,” pp. 22-24)? I myself am the proud owner of the googliest eyes around (but unlike those sharks, my singing voice is tops).
If you like oddly shaped, hilarious creatures, you’ll love this book. It’s about a bulb-headed, blue polka-dotted, sombrero-wearing octopus who tells funny jokes and a beans-and-bacon-eating, tell-it-like-it-is, chaps-wearing cowboy—and they’re best friends! These two have their differences, but that only makes their friendship stronger (and their stories even funnier!). My favorite part is when Octopus dresses up like a tooth fairy for Halloween. Or maybe it’s the time Cowboy makes Octopus a feast of beans and bacon, bacon and beans, and beans with a side of bacon—with a little beans and bacon for dessert. I can’t decide—these dudes are too funny!
H’m . . . the tales of Cowboy and Octopus remind me of another friendship between a certain eight-legged, awesome-haired, brilliantly funny Spider and a yellow-fuzzed, many-legged, science-loving caterpillar. Maybe I should write a book about Sam and me! What do you think?
