What's Everybuggy Reading: Spider
Freckle Juice

by Judy Blume
Yearling, 1971
Freckles: Some people love ‘em, some people hate ‘em. (Thistle says that Anne Shirley hated hers!) Poor Dandelion hated the teddy bear-shaped freckle on her big toe, but I think a handsome spider like me would look dashing with a sprinkling of freckles across my nose.
In Freckle Juice, Andrew wants freckles really badly. If he has freckles, he thinks, his mom won’t be able to tell if his neck is dirty or not. So he pays Sharon fifty cents for a secret family freckle recipe
. . . but it doesn’t exactly work the way he wants.
Sharon’s top-secret recipe is full of delicious ingredients like grape juice, ketchup, pepper, lemon juice, and onion. When I showed the recipe to Miro, he nearly fainted! Then he ran around his kitchen screaming “C’est horrible!” I guess I’ll have to make it myself (mwah-ha-ha).
