A New Coat for Anna

by Harriet Ziefert
Alfred A. Knopf Inc., 1986

It’s getting chilly outside! If you’re a growing buggy like me, it might be time for a cozy new coat. New coats can be pretty exciting when you’re itching for a snowball fight or a snowtubing race!

But in A New Coat for Anna, buying a new coat isn’t as easy as picking one out at the store. This book takes place at the end of World War II. Even though Anna’s mom thought they’d be able to buy Anna a coat after the war, the shops are still closed; plus, their family doesn’t have much money.

So what can Anna and her mother do? They wait months and months and trade goods like watches and necklaces in place of money. They also get wool—but that’s not enough! They have to have it spun and dyed and woven and sewn. Wow! Can you imagine? I won’t tell you how the new coat turns out . . . but you don’t have to worry. Anna will be winning snowball fights in no time!
