What's Everybuggy Reading: Thistle

Bad News for Outlaws

by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson

Carolrhoda Books, 2009

Boy, did I have a wild adventure in this month's Spider! Spidie da Dude, the meanest cowboy to ever ride the pages of the magazine, asked ME to join the notorious Web gang. What could I do? I can't say no to Spidie. But the truth is, I'm really just a kind, mild-mannered thistle weevil at heart.

I needed a break from exploring my dark side, so I picked out a true story from the wild west where the good guy pulls through in the end! This book is the exciting tale of a little-known hero named Bass Reeves, the most feared and respected lawman in all the West. As a US Marshal, Reeves hunted down outlaws and fugitives and brought them back to be tried in court. I’d reckon these outlaws were some of the meanest cowboys around (they’d have Spidie da Dude shaking in his boots!), but Reeves had a reputation for always bringing them back, dead or alive.

Before he was a US Marshal, Reeves escaped from slavery and had to hide in Indian territory until the Civil War was over. Even after the Civil War, times were hard for African Americans—but everybuggy still loved and respected Bass Reeves. After reading this book, he’s certainly my favorite hero of the Old West (sorry, Spidie da Dude)!
