What's Everybuggy Reading: Thistle
Mother Holle

by the Brothers Grimm
Pelham Books, 1997
Do you ever wonder what makes it snow? Sam says that snowflakes are frozen water droplets (check out his book review to read more about it), but I like to think that the snowflakes are secretly magic. Sometimes I pretend that they’re tiny flower petals, or bits of stars, or handfuls of whipped cream. But did you ever imagine that the snowflakes were actually feathers?
I love fairy tales, and Mother Holle is a perfect one for cozy winter nights. It’s about a beautiful, hardworking girl who is forced to work even harder by her evil stepmother. She spins yarn until her fingers bleed, but when she tries to wash off the spindle—it falls into the well! The poor girl jumps into the well to get her spindle, and finds herself in the magical world of Mother Holle, who makes snow by shaking out her huge feather bed. Mother Holle loves to reward hard work, but when the girl’s evil stepsister tries to get the same reward, things get pretty sticky!
