Sybil's Night Ride

You read in this month’s Spider that George Washington was a general in the Revolutionary War before he became our first president. I love reading about the heroes who fought for our independence, especially when President's Day is just around the corner—their adventures are so important and exciting! This book tells the story of a young girl named Sybil who helped gather the American troops when she hears that the British are attacking her home in Danbury, Connecticut.
Sybil’s father is a colonel who leaves home to gather supplies for his militia. The night that he comes home, a messenger arrives to tell him that the British are burning the storehouse where the new supplies are being kept. Someone needs to gather the troops so the Americans can fight back, and Sybil volunteers for the job. The journey to the troops' homes is dangerous, but Sybil is a very brave little girl. When she returns home, all the men in the militia are armed and ready to fight off the invading British soldiers.
Sybil’s story is true—the British really did invade Danbury on April 26, 1777, and the troops she gathered pushed the British out of Danbury. After the war, George Washington himself went to Sybil’s house to thank her for being so brave. Sigh—my hero!
