The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck

by Beatrix Potter (F. Warne & Co., 1908)
After reading “No Ducks For Dinner,” a story about sneaky ducks, I decided to read a story about a very un-sneaky duck. Jemima Puddle-Duck is friendly and talkative, but she’s not the brightest duck in the farmyard. Jemima is annoyed because the farmer’s wife won’t let her hatch her own eggs, so she flies to the woods in search of a warm, dry place to lay them.
In the woods, she meets a “gentleman with sandy whiskers” who invites her to lay her eggs in his woodshed. Jemima doesn’t suspect a thing—not even when she sees that his woodshed is full of duck feathers—but YOU should! (Hint: The gentleman has sharp teeth and a bushy red tail! Still not sure who he is? The illustrations will tell you.)
I started to get a little bit scared for Jemima while I was reading this book, but thankfully, she has friends back at the farm who save the day!
