What's Everybuggy Reading: Thistle
Word After Word After Word

Do you like to write? Maybe you write at school. Maybe you write in a secret notebook at home. And maybe you have a lot of questions—how do I write? What do I write about? Should I write about real things or unreal things? Does writing matter?
This is a wonderful book for young writers to read. It’s the story of a fourth grade class and their visiting teacher, the famous writer Ms. Mirabel. The class loves her! She wears feather earrings and has wild, thick hair, and she understands how fourth graders think. Five friends—Russell, Henry, May, Evie, and Lucy—are struggling with the different events in their lives. Lucy’s mom has cancer, Evie’s parents are separated, and May’s family is adopting a baby boy. Ms. Mirabel’s poetry class helps them change their lives and tell their own stories—word after word after word.
In this month’s Spider, you read about Doodlebug’s magic words (Skyrockets! Air pockets!), and they sounded pretty crazy, didn’t they? This book shows you that ordinary words can be magic, too.
