Miro's Kings' Cake

You don't need to be a king or a queen to enjoy this easy-to-make cake.

What You'll Need:

1 (16 oz.) can of uncooked biscuits (regular, not flaky)
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
colored sugar crystals or sprinkles
cookie sheet
aluminum foil
pastry or basting brush
a fève - gummi candy, large coin, or small plastic toy (optional*)

What to Do:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.  Line the cookie sheet with aluminum foil and grease with a little bit of the melted butter.

  1. Remove the biscuits from the can and lay them flat on the cookie sheet. With clean hands, press to form a rectangular shape that is about 1/8 inch thick.
  2. Paint the dough with the rest of the butter.
  3. Stir together the sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle it evenly over the dough.
  4. Lay the candy, coin, or toy on the dough, then carefully roll the dough lengthwise into a cylinder and pinch tightly to seal. Now connect the ends of the cylinder to form a doughnut shape. Sprinkle the top with colored sugar and bake for 35 minutes.

*To follow the French tradition, hide a fève in your Kings' Cake and make a gold paper crown while you wait for the cake to bake. When the cake is ready, the youngest person in the room crawls under the table and calls out the names of everyone in the room to decide who gets each slice. Then the eating begins! The person who gets the slice of cake with the fève in it is crowned King or Queen for a Day. Remember to warn everyone to take small bites and watch out for the candy, coin, or toy you hide in the cake!
